Lana & a few neighbor kids were playing in the backyard & decided to climb our one large tree. Lana saw Bremmer (9 mo older than her) swinging from a branch & jumping & landing on his feet & thought, "That looks fun & easy!". But (according to Lana) her hands go sweaty as she was swinging & she fell and used her arm to brace her fall. She came inside (where I was wrapping things up to take us all to school for a PTA Family Night) and said she fell & hurt her arm. She wasn't crying & I had her move it around and she said it hurt but she was able to move it so I figured she just jammed it a bit. I had her go up to her room and rest for a few minutes before we left. After Family Night Lana had soccer practice & I told her to just tell the coach that she couldn't use her arm for practice that day. I headed off to PEO & Kevin came by with Janae after Family Night was over & said that Lana spent quite a bit of time sitting on the sidelines during practice. In the morning, Lana was still complaining & Kevin said her elbow looked a little swollen so he took the morning off work & took her into the ER (I still thought all was fine). Turns out - I was wrong. She fractured her radius head (the end of her radius) and would need a sling & splint for awhile. The ER told her she'd get a cast when she saw the doctor on Friday (this was Wednesday) & Lana decided red was the color she'd pick for her cast. Unfortunately (in Lana's mind) the doctor said for elbow injuries they don't like to put hard casts on them while they heal or else they get stiff & it takes longer to fully heal so after a week she'll be taking off the splint & will move it a bit. She can't run, jump, ride scooters, etc. for 4 weeks and will need to wear her sling when she as school in the halls or at lunch so that other kids know she is "fragile". When she went back to school - of course everyone thought she was getting a cast & had asked to sign it so we brought some colored sharpies (red & purple) & the kids signed her splint instead. :)
At the E.R. She had on a long sleeved shirt so they gave her this hospital gown to wear.
After getting all wrapped up. She was excited that she got to keep the hospital gown since she couldn't put her long-sleeved shirt back over the splint.
Making the most of the situation - at her doctor's appt they took the splint off & put it back on. The doctor used 1 less roll of the wrapping & gave it to me to hold. Lana told me that her American Girl doll fell out of bed & broke her arm so we decided she needed a matching split. We made a sling out of a bandanna for her but since her arms don't bend, it doesn't work quite as well. ;) We all signed her doll's splint.
