Lana's birthday party this year was at a Mad Science lab. She is always asking, "Why?" & asked for a science kit for her birthday so this seemed like a great birthday theme - she agreed!
A friend had some extra lab coats from her daughter's birthday party & was kind enough to give them to us for Lana's party. We wrote nametags on their coats, making them all Doctors of Science. "Dr. Lana", "Dr. Janae", etc.. I also got some kid's safety glasses online & the kids loved getting all dressed up.
The Mad Scientist started out the party with showing a magic trick to the kids & then asking them the difference between magic & science.
The safety glasses came in handy as she started flicking water at the party guests! She was VERY entertaining - you can tell she loves her job.
Lana had to guess which cup had water in it - she dumped the ones Lana thought were empty on Lana's end - guess Lana wasn't 100% sure of her hypothesis!
None of the glasses dumped out water - cause one of them had the same material in the bottom that they use in diapers & it absorbed all the water. Lana examines the substance & let everyone touch it.
We got to learn about flash paper...
And we learned about how electricity moves through different substances (water, metal & this light bulb). Notice that the light stops at her hand.
She let Lana hold the light bulb & then explained that the electricity moved from the lightbulb to Lana's hand & down to her feet & into the ground.
Hildana was wearing shoes that light up when you walk on them. She had Hildana hold the lightbulb & had everyone watch her shoes. They stayed lit so long as the electricity was moving through the lightbulb & down her body to her shoes. It was very cool!
Here is Janae - she looked down at her shoes since Hildana's lit up but alas... hers stayed the same. ;)
The Mad Scientist put a substance on everyone's face to tell if they could grow up to be a Mad Scientist themselves. She had to use a special UV light & if it glowed on your skin - then you could grow up to be a Mad Scientist too! Lana's nose glowed. :)
Making slime!
Our group. We ended up having two additional siblings join us as well. Back row: Maddie, Sara, Hildana, Kelly, Lana, Alayna, Mary. Front Row: (the siblings) Hildana's sister, Evalyn, Janae & Ali.
Lana with her piñata birthday cake (wearing her lab coat & safety glasses!)
Breaking open the chocolate shell!
Look - candy inside!
I took the chocolate shell & put it in the middle of the table & the kids devoured it while I cut the cake & distributed the candy.
Lana opening presents. She was passing around a super fluffy, soft pillowcase she got from Janae & was telling people not stop hugging it! (Jokingly of course).
A rousing game of "Dr. Lana says" to kill the last 15 minutes of the party & to burn off some of that sugar!
Mary gave Lana a "best friends" bracelet. The parts magnetically stick together.
The kids had a great time & the parents did too! I was very impressed with Mad Science & am really glad Lana had her party there. :)
